Remote Hydraulics Install

Have you ever noticed though the prices at Northern Tool ( supplier of Chief) for the same size and stroke cylinders from various manufactuers varies, sometimes by alot. I have purchased various cylinders from Northern and given the application they worked great. I can see a difference in the quality though between them and the Gannon or Gilmore. Nothing wrong though in going with them, its a great way to save some money. The factory kits will add alot of extra cost but the setup is much cleaner then most folks could do themselves. Rat...

You are correct, Rat. Knowing what you have and what you need to get the job completed are key issues. Here is a photo of my toplink installed. It fits perfectly with the NH remotes. I'm pretty proud of my $178 setup. It should be noted that my cost did not include the remote control, only the cylinder. New Holland gets about $300 for the first set of remotes and about $200 each for the next two sets. Next year, I think I'll add the two remaining valves and then put a tilt cylinder on too.

JimI,

Can you give me the model# for the Chief toplink cylinder you purchased? Did you buy this from Nothern? Your cylinder has a 10" throw, but how long is it? TIA

My cylinder is a 2510TCTL and you can see the details at the following link: http://www.baileynet.com/baileynet/productBrowse.asp?sku=214995+++++++

BaileyNet is a wholesale supplier, but they sold me the cylinder. They have many more to choose from. It would be better if it were 1-1/2" shorter, but I can modify it pretty easily if it ever becomes a real problem. For now it works just fine.

Ok Jim, you have my intrest on that chief cylinder. Did you have to do anything special to buy it from baileynet? And does the cyl. still work good on your TC.?

Kevin, the cylinder works very good, but the length is about 1-1/2" longer than a normal toplink when it is adjusted to its shortest length. I had to grind down the Category 2 fittings in width and buy category 2 to category 1 adapter bushings at Tractor Supply. Check out my previous posts about fittings and hoses needed to complete the job. It's actuallly all very easy to do. If I ever need a slightly shorter toplink, I may just modify the plate on my tractor by adding new holes for the toplink to attach. I just registered with baileynet and ordered the cylinder. It showed up in only a couple of days. Be sure to give them a fax number so they can fax you a copy of your "paid" invoice if you pay with a credit card. That's all there is to it.

I'm considering just adding one control valve and using it primarily for a top link cylinder and occasionally for a side link cylinder.

When you said

"I had no idea the top link cylinders were so expensive. Here's exactly what I received for $1000.... Two rear remote kits, a top link cylinder, and a side link cylinder. "

does that mean there is a difference between the top link cylinder and the side link cylinder or can I use the same one in either place? For example, if I have one control valve I would normally use it to run a top link cylinder for my rear scoop. But, on occasion I would want to use the same control valve to run a side link cylinder when using my grader blade or plowing the garden, so I would want to remove the top link cylinder and put the solid top link back on, then remove the side link and replace it with a side link cylinder. Obviously it would be better to have both, but I’m trying to figure out a way to get by with just one control valve. I very rarely use a box blade, so it’s not worth the cost for me to have both.

Yes, Danny, you can do what you're talking about with the hydraulic cylinders. It's a bit time consuming to be swapping them out, but I think your question is only whether the same valve will work OK with either cylinder and the answer is Yes. The only difference in the cylinders (in my case at least) is the length of the stroke.
