My brother in law just had his lake house broken into and had many things stolen. They disabled his simple alarm, and stole truckloads of furniture, appliances, and even cut his gun safe from the concrete floor. This theft could have taken hours or even days. They even disconnected his heat pump and taped up the hot leads. Of course the police did not even bother to take fingerprints. His fear is that they will come back and take what is left. It seems at a remote road with no close neighbors, any barrier is worthless, as any gate could be cut if time is not a factor.

It seems a wireless remote security camera with infrared capability that will transmit an alarm and photos cellularly could be helpful. I know alarm companies have these with monitoring, but could this be done on a budget efffectively without spending thousands?? I have heard of cellular trail cameras. Any advice or ideas on how to secure a lake house or at least make it more likely to either deter the theft or apprehend someone responsible??

Unfortunately, my brother in law had no insurance because of hard times and was unprotected. And he now probably could not get insurance because of the damage done to the house yet he is still very vulnerable.

Www.homesecuritystore.com. They have whole systems with remote dvr's, night vision cameras, motion detectors which call pre loaded phone #'s, etc. Should be able to do something for around a grand or so.
Don't know what the temperature was but fingerprints don't transfer if it got too cold is what my cop buddies told me. Thieves will also look to hit the place again after he gets all new stuff.
BTW, sorry to hear.

Yikes-- what a bummer.

Haven't had any theft issues but have been looking at remote monitoring options given we also live in a very rural area. One of the larger sites out there is Smarthome but I also would be interested to hear from anyone with direct experience with such systems.

Anyone have input about the camera above... seems to be cheap. Anyone use it?

Quality camera's cost money. Without a very good resolution you will be able to see the perps, but not good enough to actually make out who they are...

have purchased cameras from super circuits and had pretty good luck with them, but you will need to spend way more than that to get a decent picture..

Look into the trail cams they use for wildlife. They take very good res pics up to 90 ft in the dark of the night and the black flash is not visible to the naked eye. Even if broken into the pics are worth a 1000 words for the insurance. I use Bushnell Bone hunters at my cabin. Good luck in your choices..
