Yea, I was getting at the outdated rear suspension had Fords hands tied. They did not want to spend the money to redesign a money maker like the Explorer so they tried to improve the ride the cheap way. I am sure it cost them 10 times over in the end.

Eh, not completely true. They went to an IRS in 2001, IIRC. It just wasn't in the cards earlier due to the fact that it was built on the Ranger frame. And there was blame on both sides in this one. Ford spec'd pressure that was rather low and Firestone still had a large batch of defective tires out there. Combine that with an SUV with high cG and lax maintenance by the general public and BOOM.
