I have a Ford 5600 with a single spool remote valve for the aux hydraulics. It's an open center system. If I hook my log splitter to the aux hydraulics, the remote valve lever needs to be held open with a bungee cord to prevent the lever from kicking back to neutral. This seems to work fine when I tested it, however, I've heard varying reports about the long term effects of running it this way. Some folks say it's fine, others say it heats up the hydraulic oil when the splitter is in neutral and shouldn't be done.

I don't hear any strain on the tractor when the splitter is in neutral. Sounds the same whether or not the splitter is operating. If I run the splitter without bungeeing the remote valve, and the remote valve kicks back to neutral, I CAN hear the tractor strain. I'm assuming the hydraulics get stuck unbalanced. It resolves when the remote valve lever is opened again.

Will running it with a bungee on the remote valve lever be hard on the hydraulic system?

Edit: It seems that the remote valve only kicks back to neutral if the splitter has retracted fully and the splitter's control lever is still held for a split second. The splitter control used to have a working detent that held the splitter lever in the retract position until it retracted fully and kicked itself to neutral. That detent no longer holds the lever, so it needs to be held back in order to retract.

I'm hoping that if I fix the splitter's valve detent, I can run the splitter normally without having to jerry rig the tractor's remote valve lever with a bungee. Hopefully the splitter's valve trips back to neutral before the tractor's remote valve does.

Keep the bungee. There's NO downside. A properly working detent on the splitter's valve will work as you suggest.
