Hi, I am looking for assistance in removing the top of the hydraulic cylinder on my Kioti backhoe to change the seals.

I have the cylinder off and I have a pin spanner in the hole on the side of the cylinder and I have tried removing the top by both counter clockwise and clockwise pressure, with no result. Can someone help me with a next step?

Thanks

Can you post a picture so we can see what type of cylinder it is? Have you tried any heat to the glad nut?

Here are a few pics. I have tried nothing but pressure and will try anything you can suggest, thanks

I would put it back on the hoe to hold it really stable, add some heat (like propane) and try again with steady pressure on the wrench. You can also try tapping the nut with a brass or lead hammer with pressure applied. Don't hit the wrench or you may shear the pin.

Thanks kennyd, I will give it a try in the morning.

squeezing the barrel close to the nut can work against you if the barrel wall thickness is not heavy.....best to grab in the vise at the cyl base end with a junk pin wedged in the mounting hole

also, if you have one avail, use an air-impact hammer with a blunt tip.....use it parallel to the hyd rod (slightly tipped toward loosening) and shock the nut while trying to unscrew with some other help to untorque...be carefull to not use it where the outside threads are on the nut, it may make more work for ya:thumbdown:

Not sure how strong that pin spanner is, I have had 100% results with pipe spanners (Stilsons) and an associated breaker/cheater bar (4 foot long metal pipe) - if you think your spanner can take the pressure then slip the pipe over the end for extra leverage.

Like KennyD says, I have always found it easiest to leave the cylinder connected to the machine to loosen the end cap. 4" cylinders that haven't been touched for many years on a 40 year-old backhoe weren't too much trouble with a spanner and extra leverage in the form of a length of metal water pipe as I mentioned previously. Good luck.
