Removing Concrete

Hi Guys,

Recently purchased a SK714-5 Komatsu skid steer at an auction. It seems to be in GWO but the previous owner has used it for concreting work and the front of it is heavily splashed. Is there any easier way to remove it other than hitting it with a hammer? I want to protect the paint underneath if possible. Any suggestions would be great...

I work for a civil engineering firm and we do alot of concrete testing. It can be a real pain to get it off once its hardened. On our testing equipment, we use vinager, and it disolves it and loosens it. I don't know what it does to paint, it might be kind of hard on it, but you might try it.

If it's not extremely thick, Sani Bowl toilet cleaner (seriously) will break it down. Doesn't hurt paint. (Learned this'n from a friends father who worked at a cement plant)

It'll clean your toilet too!

I you have a concrete plant near by stop and see if you can get some cleaner from them. We use hydrofloric acid on our mixers. There are other non acid cleaners. They are all safe on paint. A high pressure 4500psi pressure washer worke pretty good.

I just did a quick Google on hydrofloric acid. WOW! That stuff demands respect!

HF acid will penetrate the skin and attack the bone in your body. Stay away from that stuff at all cost. Any weak acid will attack concrete. Phosphoric acids like Wedac product will clean it off but I couldnt guarantee the paint. It also removes rust and carbon steel scale so if it damaged the paint, you would have a good clean surface to repaint on.

id attack it by hand.

either with a chisel and hammer (air chisel would make quick work of it) or perhaps a 4" angle grinder.

after that a quick bath with a HIGH pressure washer (3-4K psi)

after that touchup paint.

Which is known as "muriatic acid" if you go to HD/Lowes/ or any neighborhood hardware store!

Wear gloves, apron, and eye protection.

It will come off with a high pressure washer. Chances are it didn't stick that well to painted steel, with all the previous muck on the bucket. Just get under the concrete with the sprayer and it will lift right off. You way tru just a plain hose with a tight nozzle first.

ZEP makes a concrete splatter remover, i think its called "mudslide". we use it on our rental equipment at work. seems to work, and not quite so hazardous

I went by work today and looked at our tank. It is 33% hydrochloric acid. Sorry about the misinformation.
