I’m building a couple of turnouts for the horses, and I’m looking for the best way of de-rocking them.
Each turnout will be about 300’ x 300’, although we are thinking of subdividing one of them. The ground here is just full of rock, most of it ranging from fist size up to basketball sized. The soil is actually pretty good once you get rid of the rock, although sometimes I think we are actually growing rocks, they seem to keep “coming back” in our garden.
I think the plan will be to get as much rock out as possible and then put down several inches of arena sand.
I have a 72” landscape rake, and that works OK for the small projects I have taken on to date, but that looks like it will be a very slow process for a project of this size. I would not be surprised that there might be a lot of ongoing maintenance too, those rocks do seem to keep coming back.
Would a powered rack be a better way of getting this done? Can they handle rocks of this size? I have been looking at the Harley Pro-6 and the LandPride PR 2572. Anybody have experience with these? Any thoughts on which would be better? I would be using my JD 4400 to drive these.
