I am finishing up my 50 hour service on my B7800 and only need to clean the transmission strainer and put the new fluid in. I don't have a large enough socket to get the strainer off so I tried to use some vice grips. Didn't budge it with those so I guess I'm off to the auto parts store tommorow for a larger socket. Does anyone know off hand what size it takes? It looks like it must be 21 mm or something but I couldn't tell for sure and only want to buy the socket I need. Or is there another way to get the strainer out without a socket? And also, what do you use to clean it with? I was thinking I'd just use some clean transmission fluid but what is the norm? Thanks.

I'd strongly suggest that you not use Vice Grips. I don't have the right sized socket either and I have used a large Crescent wrench to pull mine off.

Kerosene is what is recommended. Paint thinner isn't an awful choice, but I'm not sure there aren't problems (although I've used it before without problems - yet /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif).

Do a search on "50 hour service--oil slick"... That thread contains a ton of information about changing the hydraulic oil and cleaning the screens on the B series Kubotas.

The last post in the thread was my summary of all of the other posts on the topic that I could find. For my B2710 the wrench that fits the hydraulic strainer is 26mm. I have two on my machine and one of them was brutal to try to remove without a breaker bar. Cutting the paint helped some...

Good luck!

bcarter, thanks sooooo much for that information. I found the post and it really helped me immensly. The only bad thing is that I just went out and spent $50 on a new socket set that only goes up to 22mm and 7/8" as well as a 1" and 1 1/8" socket but no 26 (or 27) mm. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Oh well, you can never have too many tools, right? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif This has been the never ending project for me but as soon as my wife gets home I am off to the hardware store to get the right size socket and will finish the job! My son's napping so I can't go right now. I'll also go out and double check the size of my strainer - maybe they've changed it since that thread. I doubt it but I might as well check. Thanks again for the post, it really helped put me at ease concerning my fifty hour service.

I went through the same agony...and I researched every thread on this site that dealt with hydraulic fluid replacement to try to put myself at ease. My summary at the end of the "oil slick" post was more for my benefit than anyone else's (put all the instructions in one place for the next time), but I'm glad that it helped someone else as well.
