Removing tiny stumps

I have one of these too, works pretty good for me. Usually pull them with my FEL, but you can pull them out too.

I've though about renting a tractor with a ripper like Gary Fowler suggests, maybe I will.

I'd still like to know if anyone has tried using a chain saw with a de-barker on it.

Frankly, with as many as you have to get rid of. I might try renting a skid steer with what they call a Harley rake on the front. It's sort of like a tiller but with shorter tines, it is usually used to get rid of rocks and smooth out the dirt before planting a lawn, but in my opinion it should work fairly well on your small stumps, especially if they are somewhat loose.

I'm not familiar with the OP's trees but I suspect they are shallow rooted "runners". Years ago I hooked a chain to a box elder and pulled...I got 20+/pull.

On my property a "tiny" stump is any pine tree stump less than 6" in diameter. When I thin my stands, every spring, I simply leave the stumps. They will be rotted within two years and have turned to dust. Certainly not worth any effort trying to remove them.

I've been looking at grubbers for a few years now. Most users say it is best to cut the brush leaving a foot or two so you can get a good grip. Unfortunately, I cut my brush too low (I think). I may look again at this.

Yes they are runners. I have pulled a couple with my 20hp tractor. It was not pleasant. Not enough power.

The area where the stumps are is being transformed into a recreational site.

Gotta get rid of the small stumps as they are ankle busters.

Yes they are runners. I have pulled a couple with my 20hp tractor. It was not pleasant. Not enough power.

I used an old Ford pick-up that had a creeper gear. It grunted.

Yes, but not all stumps are like that. It depends on species and climate. I have some small cut off stumps in my yard that were there when I bought the place 16 years ago. Cedar mostly. Just as good as the day I moved in.

Yes - I can see how some species need more attention than just lopping them down. There are times I wish my property had mixed species. Not the case - its 100% Ponderosa pine.
