I recently removed the rear fender section and footrest section from my X728 to repair the deck height adjuster. Now in hindsight it occurs to me that I may have been able to remove ONLY the footrest section to do the job.

My question - Has anyone removed the footrest section alone without first removing the rear fender section? Can it be done without scratching up the paint?

TIA, Mike.

FWIW - I answered my own question by trying to remove the footrest and decided that it's best to remove the rear fender section first. It's only a couple more bolts and just the easiest way to go.

The more I get to know this machine the more I like it. The engineers did a good job of making the machine simple and easy to work on. One good example of this is the deck lift system. The hydraulic ram that lifts the deck was not retracting as far as when it was new because of wear in the parts. At first I was stumped at how I was going to fix it until I found that the hydraulic ram was not bolted directly to the frame. Instead they chose to strap it to the frame with a U-bolt so that all I had to do was to loosen two nuts on the strap and slide the ram back a fraction of an inch and it pulled all of the slack out of the mechanism. I thought that was ingenious.

Also if your deck height adjuster knob on your x728 won't go into the 5" position this is the solution to the problem. Remove the deck or lift the deck all the way up and then support it with wooden blocks so that the weight of the deck is not on the system. Then loosen the strap that holds the hydraulic ram to the left hand frame rail and pry the ram back until the deck height adjuster turns freely into the 5" (highest) position. Tighten the strap, adjust the deck and you're done.
