I called around a couple weeks ago to get prices on renting either a track loader or bulldozer. I have a little digging to do to finish my pond.

I called two places first that only do rental heavy equipment and got some prices around 500 a day for a pretty big cat dozer.

Then I called a tractor dealer with a bunch of big rental equipment on the lot and got fed a line of crap I think. They started quoting all the extra charges and everything and it came up to over 1000 a day just for an old backhoe.

They said there were EPA charges, state environmental charges and a bunch of other extra charges similar to that that added up to about half the cost.
Are any of you in Texas that know if there really are all these state and federal fees just to rent a machine? I've worked at dealers before and the only extra fees I remember was if they didn't bring it back full of fuel and as clean as it was when they took delivery.

You are getting charged back the environmental and diesel engie fees that they paid when they purchased or put the machine into service. You are better off finding a smaller outfit to rent from. If I go to Vermeer in TX, I have enviromental fees, state, local, mta and other taxes that add up to about 12-15% plus the damage waiver. It's one reason why I don't rent too much. Vote the ******** out of office that keep raising taxes on every friggin' thing a contractor touches.

So they really do tax all this crap. I wasn't aware it had gotten so bad. It's odd that the BIG rental place here doesn't itemize all this on their bill though. I thought it was law that taxes had to be itemized out on a receipt. I know we always do that with our customers.

Maybe the big place is just absorbing the cost or more accurately adding it in to the price but not telling about it.

I guess I could just keep digging my pond with my farm tractor too. I've been using the rear blade on it and borrowing my neighbors Kubota with a loader when I needed it. His tractor scares me though on that steep pond bank. Mine is about 3 times the size of his and a lot more stable. It's starting to make me nervous though too.

I got a quote last summer from Nations Rent ( seen them at some Lowes stores),
$1500 for 40 hrs D-6 delivered. Fuel extra. Delivery was 20 miles.

They have the small outlets at the Lowes, but also have a larger commercial division.

heck you can't rent a S185 bobcat for that here.

I want the number to that Nations! I would'nt pick up and deliver a D6 for 1 day for that!!! Much less 40 hours usage......

I think they are just playing games with you on those fees (trust me I am in the business) it is just a way to have low rates and then get you in the door and say "Oh, everybody does this, it's taxes" now to cover myself it could be a county issue that I don't know about, but the only extra tax that is taken in above sales tax is the TERP tax here in Texas and it is a 2% Tax on equipment over 50HP. Then you will have your damage waiver (insurance) and that should be it other than state and local taxes.

This is an old rental trick though, you get guys who only rent periodically calling and getting book rates for equipment, so they have the lowest book rate and that gets you in the door right. Then when you get there and go to write the check and it is for a lot more than what you thought. They tell you it's taxes and fees and that everybody does it. Most people will just write the check because they do not want to appear that they never rent equipment and don't know what is going on!!
