Repair quote from dealer?

When discussing a repair with your local dealer - do you ask for a quote or estimate?

What would you think if the dealer refused to provide an estimate of the repair costs?

Many repaires you have to do a lot of work to find the full extent of the damage. I always tell customers it is a can of worms, once you open it, it takes money to close the wound.

I would think that the dealer has not performed that type of repair before and has no knowledge of it. I would ask another dealer.

In some instances they may not be able to give an estimate because of the unknowns. I would never let them just tear into it and just suprise me with a bill later. You could maybe tell them to do whatever it takes to a set amount, then notify you when it gets to that point and go from there.

Get it in writing - nothing verbal. Just diagnose and quote the repair.

Get everything in writing.

Look up a post by Robert in Ny on a Ford 7710 repair. After reading that, you will understand why I say written only.

I've gotten quotes for diagnosing. But few have been willing to commit to a price for the total repair. Having been in the repair business, I understand why. Occasionaly you hear the discription and know exactly why... But then something else happens...
