Repairing a Bostitch Coil Roofing Nailer

I lent my Bostitch roofing nailer to my son-in-law and it came back not working. The nailer keeps jamming in the nose and deforms the nail. I have not tore into yet as I am unsure of exactly how to proceed on the repairs. Any advice or helpful hints would be appreciated. Thanks!

My dad's stanley bostitch did the same thing and we ended up ordering a kit for it that had a bunch of O-rings and some other pieces. I think we had to order it from Granger. That has been a few years ago. After putting it back together, it worked like a champ.

The coil roofers commonly get gummed up with tar build-up. Some of the better pro lumber yards will stock a cleaner to degrease the gun without damaging o-rings. You can try brake cleaner but, no guaranty it won't harm the o-rings. There is usually a plastic cover over the feeder pawl, remove that and clean. Tar in that area can cause what you're experiencing. Otherwise, you'll be buying an o-ring repair kit.

Update:
Cleaned the nailer up and removed a small piece of nail lodged in the plunger and it is shooting nails like it should. Thanks to both for your replies especially shvl73, that info was just what I needed to get the nailer going again.

On my roofing nailer, I routinely spray liberally with WD-40 as it releases all the accumulated tars as well as lubes the gun.
Works for me!

In fact I routinely treat all my nailers with WD-40 and find they really like it.

My Hitachi framing nailer is close to 15 years old and was bought used and never seen a repair to date.
And that gun has 'shot' pallet loads of 3 1/4" nails!
