What are the steps to replace the alternator drive belt on 1991 Ford 555C? Can you take the 4 bolts off the driveshaft pulley, unbolt the hydraulic pump and move it back a bit to slip the belt on? Thanks.

Talked with friend who had 555 and he said following: Unbolt the drive shaft from the pulley (4 bolts) and slide the shaft back so you clear enough for the belt. Do not need to unbolt the pump.

If you are still active, does this friend know if this idea apply to a 655C also. I am about to try to remove the pump, but if there is really enough play in the driveshaft to move it forward enough to slide the belt in, that would be preferable ( I THINK). Any ideas on how to secure the rotation of the crank and drive shaft so I might be able to bust lose the 4 bolts? Access is pretty tight unless I remove the radiator and I have know idea how I would do that as I can see no way to get the front cowling off.

I really want to find the engineer (and I use that term loosely) who thought that putting a driveshaft through the belt travel was a good idea knowing that the belt is a consumable and will have to be replaced as a matter of normal use. He must have worked at Ford in Dearborn also before moving to Belgium to work on backhoes.

Have you tried unbolting the shaft and moving it to allow belt removal?

Removing the belt is not the issue, it broke. If there is enough play in the driveshaft to move it forward, I will give that a go. Looking for ideas on how to prevent the crank from moving while I am trying to loosen the four bolts holding the flange to the crank pully, and if there are any tricks someone know to get better access to those four bolts. When I get a socket on them and a breakerbar the pully just rotates. Thx for the quick reply

I haven't had to replace the belt on my 555A so am guessing here. Is there an access hole at the bell housing that would allow you to hold the flywheel with a large screwdriver or something similar?

Next solution would be to get the socket and breaker bar set up and then rather than gently pull on the bar, smack it with a hammer to knock the bolts loose. Similar to the action of an impact.

Not familiar with a link belt.

Thanks I will crawl under to see if such a hole exists. Also good idea with the hammer tap, I can see the back side of the bolts protruding through the flange so maybe some penetrating oil might also persuade. Appreciate the help. I have a full set of manuals for the machine. detailed instructions for most everything...except on replacing the belt.

Tomorrow I'll look at my WSM and see if it offers anything.

The sharp impact to a box end or even a ratchet is the best.
Once you get them loose go through all of them and back them out till free and then lube and replace them just a couple of turns.
That way they will stay lined up when you remove the four of them.

If you don't use it much the linked belts do work and if the bolts are really siezed,
a link belt to make it usable while using penetrating oil on the bolts.
