I have an old beater bruch hog that works but the u joint just blew apart. I got to looking and dont see a cluch or shear pin. It also has no guard. Im not sure what i should now replace. Do i buy a new shaft with a friction clutch or just a cluch and u joints?
I no nothimg about the ratings and sizes.

I have a Massey Ferguson 230 (35hp) and the cutter is a covington cutter.

If it's around 5' its probably class 4. I'd get a shaft with a shear pin. It's cheaper than the clutch and doesn't require maintenance.

Walk into any Tractor Supply Co or most any other place that has a substantial inventory of farm-related stuff. You'll want to measure the length that you'll need. Measure from your tractor's PTO output shaft (closest to the tractor) and to the rear part of the PTO on the bush hog's shaft as the bush hog is oriented/mounted on your 3pt. The length you want is this plus AT LEAST 7", the 7" is the overlap (two shaft pieces; one slides inside the other and that's your overlap). When you get the shaft you may have to cut it down to size (if you get one that's longer); you measure based on the minimum distance that your cutter will be to the tractor (usually this is when you've got it raised up a bit)- if your PTO is too long you'll jam things (not too problematic if the PTO isn't running, but if it is you can screw up U-joints); BUT, you must have sufficient overlap.

35hp tractor would be Class 4. I believe the PTO shaft for my Bush Hog 286 (6-footer) is only a Class 4: I'm running it, or rather I'm in the process of -it's new to me and I'm getting the tail wheel bracket repaired- running it on my 55hp Kioti.

Also, double check the size of your PTO shafts. Should be 1 3/8", but there are some odd balls (usually older) ones that are smaller.

Check with agri supply, they seem to have some of the best prices on complete pto shaft assemblies I've found.bif you have a location nearby it's even better but the mail order is still decent.

The class relates to the power the shaft is designed to handle. The 5' cutter I have uses a class 4, which is a common type. Having the PTO shaft too long can also damage the PTO inside the tractor- when you raise the implement the shaft will jam up against the pto shaft and put force on it that it's not designed for. Don't forget to account for the mower deck floating or pivoting up when you back up into a bank. The shaft to a rotary is long so it should be easy to get enough overlap while being short enough to not bind. The shear pin type pto is the most common. AgriSupply has a good selection. You should also get the shield that bolts on the gearbox and keeps body parts out of the U-joint on that end. Like this: Shield to fit Shear Bolt PTO | Agri Supply #11785
