Well I finally got the impact socket & adapter I needed to remove the old blades on my KK rough cut mower. I knew they were bad....but now I'm pretty /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif at how bad the blades really were.

No issues with replacing them and a little bit of test mowing shows that new sharp blades cut a lot nicer than these old ones.

Check out how nasty these guys were!! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Have you been mowing rock gardens with them? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Bird,

This is the original set that I did use to do all the rough work on the acreage. I "found" some stones in the tall grass and a few other goodies. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I'm pretty much done with the clean up though, and most of the cutting now is pasture, path, and cut line maintenance. I'm hoping the new blades will be around for a long time.

To tell you the truth, I've seen a lot worse, and they look like they could easily be sharpened. You would end up with a few notches after sharpening, but that just makes them more "agressive".

My neighbors were completely rounded. No edge what so ever. I think you can sharpen these. At least save them as spares. I have found that keeping blades of the same age together reduces vibration unless you balance them.

I will certainly be taking them in to get sharpened and keeping them as spares. They sure don't have to be perfect after they're sharpened. I don't think I'll try to do it myself though. I don't have a grinder. I'd also be concerned about ensuring they end up weighing the same at the end of it. I'm pretty good with wood...not so good with metal /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The rough cut blades don't need to be very sharp. In fact I was told or these was previous discussion on the rough cut blades tend to chop more than cut any way. When mowing the thicker longer grass and weeds the blade will chop the grass up anyway. I would just take a grinder and do the best you can with them and re-use them.

Those look like new ones compared to the ones I took off last year. They probably looked like that a couple of years earlier, but by the time I changed thme the were so worn out they were about 3" short.

/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif That must have made for a high quality cut! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I know the cut was getting really bad on mine which was one of the tips suggesting that the blades could use replacing. The other tip was the many loud noises made by hitting rocks over the duration of the clean up. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Using a 4-1/2" or 7" angle grinder, I could make those just about as good as new. KK gives you a little extra steel which makes their blades ideal for numerous maintenance sharpenings. Only concern I'd have is on the lower blade (in your pic), it looks like there maybe a crack. If so, I'd toss the blade. If not, sharpen away. With a good job, these would not have to be relegated to just rough cut, and will give you just as good of a job as the new blades. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
