I broke the nylon knob on the BX's 3-point hitch lowering speed control. I got a new one and it is not going to be as easy as I thought to replace. It seems to be threaded onto a shaft and also indexed with a roll pin. If that is true it is some very strange engineering. It looks like I may have to take half the tractor apart to replace this sucker as it is below the seat structure and above the transaxle. Anyone with some experience on this with any hints? Thanks in advance.

Well that didn't take long. I'm too gentle a mechanic these days. Split the remnants of the handle with a cold chisel. Note the orientation of the roll pin on the shaft and push the handle onto the shaft so that the roll pin engages the slot in back of the knob. Tap with hammer to seat. Oh and don't step on it and break it next time.

Well, now there is a thread to look for when this happens to anyone else.

Thanks for updating us!

I'd like to Bump this thread as the answer seems to have disappeared; I have to replace the RH rear lift link which requires lifting the fender about 2" to rotate it so it will fit out the hole on the LH side.

If it's a slip fit, I have no problem being a tool box full of hammers type of mechanic, but I don't want break anything... else.

Thanks

The answer:

It is a slip fit and a very tight one at that. I ended up using a shrink wrap blower (a hair dryer on high will do), a dead blow (to lightly tap), and elbow grease. If you keep heating, twisting, and tugging; it'll come off. (get your mind out of the gutter):ashamed:

I probably didn't need the dead blow.

I use a small 3 jaw gear puller to grab the knob & then hook a slide hammer to the gear puller. Couple of quick taps & knob comes right off. Works on the mower height adj knob as well. I have had to remove the rear fender on the BX24 a couple of times & I found this works best for me.

Many thanks to all - i was afraid to put a little muscle on it. Pair of pliars behind and just a few light taps with a claw end of a hammer (to the pliars of course) and she came right off.

thanks guys!
