Replacing a JD1209 swather...

Currently using a Farmall 75C to pull a JD 1209 swather that I got cheap several years ago. It works good enough, but if i speed up it leaves far too much grass below the cut.

Tax accountant says we should buy something too....

Looking for recommendations for a pull-behind discbine/flail conditioner that would be properly sized for my 75 horsepower, 540PTO tractor. So far i'm coming up with stuff that is made for more horsepower than I have, or 1000pto which i also don't have. Looking to the group to give me a head start with my education efforts.

According to tractordata, you have got about 65 PTO hp to work with.

I would be looking for a red New Idea 5209.

I had 2 1209s and liked them better than the NH closed driveshaft (forget the number). Both had the same problems.....sickle bars.

I'd opt for a drum or disc. When moving away from the sickle, I started looking at discs not knowing drums existed. I looked at used ones (discs) as my operation wouldn't justify an new one. All I saw had the bottom of the bar full of brass brazed repairs....I guess they cracked and were full of oil which was leaking out. Besides the prices were way up there.

I stumbled across a Turkish made 190 drum and it made a lot of sense. It was only 2 drum and 6' but I was retiring and it fit my retired farming practices to a T. I run it with a 47 engine hp now (just added the 3910 Ford) and it does just fine.

I know wider drums are available as I recall somebody on one of my visited farm sites mentioned he had a 3 drum...forget the size. your 75 hp would handle a 3 drum. I know of none that crimp, some wind row and some don't. Mine doesn't crimp (MOCO) but does WW and that's what I want because that gives me a clean path for my tractor tires on the next pass....not rolling over freshly clipped grass. When crimping is necessary, I come back with a IH or NH forget which, 404 crimper. HTH

I've been using a 6' Tar river drum mower, that I think is Turkish, but anyway, I like it. Just took my first cutting that was thick, deep, lush and the mower blew right thru it.I'm using a Kubota L4330, no rear hydraulics. The price was right also.
