Tractor
NH TC29
2000 TC-29, 230 hours, 9x3 manual tranny

Clutch pedal goes to floor and does not release the clutch, however clutch appears to hold just fine, so assuming it's a TO bearing issue.

For the last couple of hours of operation, the bearing was squealing when I depressed the clutch.

Anyway, any idea what I'm looking at as far as repair effort/cost? I'm assuming the tractor will need to be split?

Thanks,

TB

I'm a bit confused by the statement above.

If the clutch is not releasing then how do you tell it is holding fine? Is it because the transmission is stock in the gear and you're trying to push the tractor and tractor refuses to budge?
Can you change gear and move? if so , then the clutch is probably okay and you may have either release bearing or the fingers of pressure plate or both not functioning correctly. If you go to the hassle of splitting the tractor you probably want to put a new clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing.

Have you attempted any adjustment on the clutch pedal?

Do You have live PTO with dual stage clutch?

Sorry - this issue slowly degraded over about 30 minutes of use, when I could get it in gear (on slope and could catch the gear on a slight roll, then tractor operates like clutch is ok.

No live PTO/dual stage clutch.

I am assuming the tractor needs to be split, and will definitely replace clutch if that is the route they need to go - just trying to get a handle on complexity and cost.

Tractor is new to me - I've only put 5 hrs on it, and it had a noisy clutch when I bought it (but price was right enough that I figured a ~$2k in repairs when making my decision).

2000 TC29 - 200 hrs - with NH loader, NH backhoe, 5' shredder and 24' trailer for $10k, so I think I did ok...

Hmm.. my data sheet shows a live pto on that model.. am I missing something?

(Shows either a hydro tranny option with IND pto.. or 9x3 / live 540.. and optional 2000 id pto.. )

Sorry guys, I'm a little green; I've only had the tractor for 2 weeks, and it's my first.

Since I've got the backhoe on, I haven't even looked at the PTO.

Just trying to see what I'm in for with this repair.

What Soundguy is saying that you have dual stage clutch or live PTO. splitting the tractor cost and effort is the same. For my ford-1700 that has transmission driven pto with single clutch the cost of clutch disk and pressure plate is about $100 for a re-manufactured one with the core returned. I saw a price of $800 with a dual clutch system. consider having two clutch disk that is sandwiched by two pressure plate mounted to flywheel. The adjustment is a bit trickier as half way pedal travel should release transmission clutch and all the way clutch pressing disengages PTO clutch.

Most of the time when the TO bearing goes out, it also takes the release fingers on the clutch with it. Since you said it was making noise, I suspect it stopped turning and wore down the clutch release fingers enough that your pedal no longer has any effect and the clutch does not release. You will have to split the tractor and expect to replace at least the TO bearing and clutch pressure plate. The clutch disc may still be okay, but why put it back in when that is one of the cheapest parts. I'd just replace all parts. I'm not sure of cost, but I'd guess at least $1200-$1500 with most of that going to the splitting labor.

Also, while the tractor is split would be a good time to look at seals for seeping leaks. I'm pretty sure that's a standard practice in your dealer's shop anyhow.

As a follow-up to my problem.

Throwout bearing was trashed, looks like it was abused pretty badly by DPO.

New Clutch, Pressure Plate, and Flywheel (missing teeth??!!).

Parts and Labor $1200

Having them do a full service including the replacement of all fluids filters and belt for another $300 as it never had the break-in service performed.

Thanks everyone, advice was spot-on.

Seems strange to have failure with so few hours, but you never know what you're getting when buying used.

Curious, how much of the $1200 was for parts and how much for labor?
