I'm replacing the detent valves on the front end loader control for my NH TC29.
My basic question is whether the new parts should be lubricated before installing and with what and how much.
I don't see how any hydraulic fluid can get into the detent. But I find that water accumulates in the cap leading to rust and freezing up in the winter.
Any thoughts?

I believe you can use vaseline to hold the ball bearings, springs, o-rings, and other parts in place, and it won't have any downsides if it somehow does come in contact with hydraulic fluid.

Hydraulic fluid really shouldn't reach the detent action unless the spools are leaking, and even then, it won't really be circulating. So you can probably get away with any old grease really.

Does that suggest that the real way to solve the recurring presence of moisture in the detents is to rebuild the spools with all new o-rings and seals?

Not to me. I guess I don't understand where the water could be coming from other than an external leak. Couldn't possibly be internal in my mind. Is the tractor stored outdoors?
