Anyone have suggestions on the best way to re-power a 16G? Are there alternative engines to the Kohler Magnum that will fit?
Obviously buying a new engine is not practical, need to do this for $500 or under.

Thanks in advance.

What happened to the Kohler? Is it repairable?
I powered mine (had NO engine when I bought it) with an Onan B48, but it opens up a can of worms what with needing an Onan adapter plate, redoing the exhaust and controls...it could get more costly than a rebuild, depending on your circumstances.
Lots of folks are using Honda GX engines to repower as well.
In reality, any engine with a 1.125" shaft will work.
Hope that helps some,
T

I suppose the Kohler is repairable, but not sure that is the best path. The left Cylinder connecting rod broke, which in turn bent the crankshaft. A total rebuild is quite expensive. This is an old tractor, though being a gravely I want to save it. I have located a $300 used B&S from a 16G...I'm going to do the rebuild with that. But the Onan and Honda information is exactly what I was looking for.

So far on two of my commercial mowers I went with a Kawasaki engine. Never had an issue and they have plenty of shaft diameter options available. Pulled a 22 HP Kohler and dropped a 27 HP Kaw, Z mower go go go now.
