Reversing an electric motor

/ Reversing an electric motor #11
I don't recommend a motor under a hay elevstor. There is so much chaff coming off bales as they are loaded that the motor will be buried after just a short while. Chaff will get into the belt area and will heat up. Pretty soon heat from the covered motor or belt rub may cook the motor or start a fire. All mine are outboard of the conveyer chain and rails. I use one to get bales up to the mow and another that is horizontal to move them in and out of the mow stations.

Seems to me that it's a bit dangerous to put the motor at the top. I've always seen them with the motor on the bottom and I think there's a reason for that. But that's just me.

Also, am I confused, or will the teeth that grab the bales be backwards? Maybe new ones have bi-directional teeth. I guess I haven't looked real close.

I will be storing the elevator on the upper level of the barn. I thought it would be easier to lower the lighter end to the ground rather than the much heavier end with the motor. I can easily rig the power supply so than it can be turned on and off from the ground or upper level of the barn. The manufacturer said it is more efficient for the motor to be pulling the bales up the elevator rather than pushing them from the ground. Although they do admit that either way would work fine. As for the teeth on the chain - it can be set up either way depending on how the chain is installed.

The motor is a sealed farm duty motor. It is mounted off to the side of the elevator.
