Have any of you thought about or looked into reversing the flow of the pto pump- much the way a skidsteer works?

HI,
MOST HYDRAULIC PUMPS ARE DESIGNED TO RUN EITHER
CW, OR CCW. SOME PUMPS ARE MOUNTED DIRECTLY TO THE ENGINE, AND THEREFORE IF AN ENGINE IS TURNING CLOCKWISE, A PUMP MOUNTED DIRECTLY HAS TO TURN CCW. IF YOU ONLY HAVE A PUMP THAT TURNS THE SAME DIRECTION AS THE ENGINE, YOU CAN USE IT, IF IT IS MOUNTED CORRECTLY. WITH BELT DRIVE, IT CAN BE SET UP TWO WAYS.
TO GET TO YOUR QUESTION, YOU CAN REVERSE THE HOSES, BUT THOSE APPLICATIONS THAT REQUIRE AN IMPLEMENT SUCH AS AN AUGER, OR STUMP GRINDER, WOULD TURN BACKWARD. MOST HYDRAULIC MOTORS WILL TURN EITHER DIRECTION. SOME BLADES LIKE SAW BLADES CAN BE REVERSED . I DO THIS ON MY TREE PRUNER IF I WANT TO DO AN UNDER CUT OR OVER CUT
WHAT APPLICATION WOULD YOU WANT TO REVERSE THE FLOW OF THE PTO? J.J.

Richard - what I think would be great would be a electric reversing valve that changes flow direction - it would also be nice to have a diverter with this so you can set the gpm you want

There are many applications where a reverse flow would come in handy - tiller, auger etc

Make sure you check your pump or motor for the necessary releif valves needed to run in both directions. If they don't have these you will damage them, refer to the manufaturer specfications. As for reversing the PTO that's easy if you have a hydraulic PTO(no motor or shaft mechanism). All you need to do is use a motor control valve(high flow with detents in all positions). Connect the PTO pressure side line to the valve IN and the valve OUT to the PTO return line. Then you add hoses to the work ports on the valve and you're done. Push the lever one way for normal rotation, the other way for reverse. You also get the added feature of having a neutral position as well.

RA: We had to have two way flow in our use of the two PT's that we use. We mounted a valve on the bucket arm and plumbed the PTO hose to it. It has a detent in both directions that allows us to use an auger and to also back it out if it gets stuck. In talking to Terry at the factory, it seems that some of the motors that they use on some of their attachments will not handle an opposite flow. (Blows the seals) So if you set one up as we did be very careful to run these attachments the right way.

Hey...see a post from me back in the Spring (use search). I posted a hydraulic schematic for how to plumb in an electric selector valve to do this. There's other ways, but a selector valve (electric or manual) is one of them.

As someone else noted, be careful about reversing the flow. Some hydraulic motors aren't designed to be reversible and some are. I've heard that most of the hi-speed hydraulic motors that PT uses are NOT reversible (like stump grinder), but that most of the low-speed hi-torque motors are (like power auger). Check with PT on specific attachments' reversibility.

Dave
