I think last spring I promised an update [yeah, I know, I haven't posted anything in a while  ] on the effect of my spool valve for tilling:

AWESOME!!!! :D :D :D

I tilled a small patch [maybe 1500sq-ft] full of more tree roots, buried junk, and rocks than I even imagined. Actually even with the weight of the 2445, all the obstacles about shook the crap out of me, but the reverse made it bearable: stuck rock, reverse spits it right out; tree root, ditto. Level the high spots, foward/reverse depending on where you want it to go.

The only negative is one I had before; I must have contaminats that I just can't flush or find, as both the original relief and this one seem to like getting contaminated. Also, I do wish I had a true motor spool valve configuration, but I got this one cheap at the time! :p

Chad,

Nice to hear from you again. Good report on the spool valve. In addition to reverse rotation to clear rocks and roots does the reverse rotation provide advantages for tilling? Since the tines are tapered on only one side I am curious how well it works with reverse rotation?

Hi Dale!

Computer time [for leisure anyway] has been pretty short, but I had to give an update on this. On a side note, we finally sold our place up in your neck of the woods; when we brought the PT through Watertown [actually, last fall for that] there was no time for a detour your way, but a comparison would have been fun.

Actually, I did play with CRT, obviously lost some cutting power on the back side of the tines, but it sure seemed leave a nice "tilled" consistancy. That said, the obstacals were so frequent that my opinions are based on just seconds at a time of continously running CRT. The dirt piled different too, I think the right tilt angle can make this very convienient at the ends - not enough time to say for sure though.

Also, for buried "treasures", the CRT seemed great for throwing the junk out of the way, rather than having to chew through it. Rocks and tree roots though, I'm still not sure if there was a better direction, so I used FWD mostly.

Chad,

To bad we never had the opportunity to introduce our PTs to each other. Good luck on you new ventures.
