My employer may soon be acquiring a new property which I will manage. Included with this particular property is a New Holland 1630 tractor with 7308 loader and 5' Howse brush hog. This machine has been sitting, unused, in the bottom of a bank barn for at least 3 1/2 years. The tractor is a hydrostatic, 4x4, super-steer version. I believe it has about 1,400 hrs. It was said to be functioning prior the previous owner entering a care facility. Aside from charging the battery, checking all fluid levels and checking for rodent nests, what else should I consider doing/checking prior to starting it? After I can confirm that it's functional, then I will begin the process of cleaning, changing fluids, filters, lubricating, etc. There does appear to have been some type of fluid leak on the right hand side - there is some discolored soil on the floor beneath the machine and the area around the oil pan/lower right side shows some evidence of a dust-covered fluid on it. I've only seen this machine very briefly when touring the property, so I haven't yet been able to assess if it was a leaky hydraulic hose on the loader, for example, or something more serious. It may have just been overflow from filling the fuel tank on the machine over time.

Drain fuel, rinse tank and refill with fresh fuel. Change the fuel filter if there is one.
Check air intake (for mice) change air filter
Top off the battery and charge, check specific gravity of electrolyte and if good you can do a load test to see how it holds a charge.
Change coolant, flush and refill.
Change tranny oil and filter

Drain and add Fresh fuel..
Install new battery
Loosen the inlet line AT the injection pump.. turn on the key & see if it has an electric supply pump.. IF it does, it'll push fuel to the inlet.
Tighten the line.
Loosen steel lines AT THE INJECTORS.. "IF" the pump starts pumping, you don't want that stale fuel going into the injectors.
AND u can SEE if the pump is pumping..
If its NOT pumping, I can help u w/that..
Good luck..

Well, it runs. I spent a few hours today getting it ready to try to start. Charged battery, checked all fluids, drained fuel lines, changed fuel filter, bled the fuel system, aired up the tires. I don’t think the glow plugs work. I noticed a few old empty cans of starting fluid in the barn where it was stored. At some point, a starter button was added. The glow plug light comes on and seems to stay on if the ignition key switch is turned to the start position (which doesn’t start it because it has a push button). Anyways, I tried cycling what I thought were the glow plugs, and then cranked for 15 second cycles. After several tries, I squirted some fluid in the intake and it fired up.

Questions:
1. Glow plugs- how/what to do test? If this thing is used to starting fluid, what damage if any has been done?
2. The PTO light is always on on the dash even though both PTOs are off. What to check?
3. There seems to be no float detent on the loader joystick?
4. Tilt steering - the steering column doesn’t hold position. What to check?

I took the loader and brush hog off and power washed it. Next steps will be changing all fluids and filters. The front tires need to be replaced and a couple of other bits and pieces. I need to check and make operational all of the safety switches.

Most of those tractors have a "safety switch" for the trans & PTO.. if the lite remains on, that's probably why they put a start button on it.. instead of fixing the pto sensor/switch.. basically by-passing the sensor/switch so it would start..?? That's just a guess tho.
U can wire the GP's up to a push button also.. IF u google GP test procedure, theres 50 videos showing u how..
Good luck. OH, & put that can of "quick start" away.!!! or your next post will be, "who can overhaul my 1630 engine.?"

I wonder how many engines have been wrecked over the years with that stuff? I've seen enough gas engines cough up a rod using starting fluid that I don't think I would be brave enough to even try it on a diesel.
