Rewiring a generator.

Hello everyone. I had to resign up but I am back with the 8n problems. I had the starting problems back in the fall and it got to cold to work on the thing outside. I hauled the 8n to a friends garage and am planning to get back to it. I am switching to 12 volts. I am defiantly going to get the original generator rewound to keep the look if the tractor.

The questions are:

The voltage regulator has to be what?

What is a ammeter or what replaces it?

I have the wiring harness #8N14401B from Wenger's tractor parts here in PA and will that take the new 12 volt system?

I wanted to get the best float and carb rebuilt kit I can so what and where??

You don't have to get the generator rewound, just the fields changed and they bolt in. However, a generator doesn't put out that much amperage, and will not keep up with charging the battery and running much in the way of lighting, so you may want to think twice on whether it's worth using a generator for this. See Generator Conversion and they have a good discussion on the different styles of 8N generators and what can be done with them. Some are as small as 8 amps output.

The voltage regulator needs to be a modern 13.5 volt (12 volt call size) regulator. I would not use an ammeter unless you just want to make things look original, but make sure you have properly sized wiring and good connections so that it will not cause the generator to not charge the battery or worse, start an electrical fire.

I have no clue what that wiring harness is, I would talk to Wengers.

The carb floats/rebuild kits I have bought at Tractor Supply have been fine.
