I am going to need some parts, and maybe a little help with pictures when it comes time to put it back together, especially with the belt path and pulley location.
I am going to need some new tires, and maybe wheels. My preference is to buy solid tires, rather than have to deal with keeping them inflated with air everytime I want to use it. I am going to have to buy or make at least two of the rollers that the mower floats on. If I can find a suitable material to make the rollers out of, then I may just turn them on my little lathe. If not, the rollers are another item to purchase. Another item that I am not sure about, is on one of the pins that holds a pivot point for a roller, there appears to be a very thin plastic type of bushing material, which is going to need replacing. I also plan on replacing at least one, and probably both of the seals in the gearbox. I actually stopped at a JD dealership, to pick up some paint, and tried to buy those seals, but they didn't have them in stock in ANY of their stores. (So they gave me the size of the seal so I could purchase it at a bearing/seal store)
I am probably going to have to order all of the above listed parts and will end up paying the shipping on them, so I kind of want to see if any of the members of TBN can get them parts for me.
Does anyone have a picture of their JD 261 with the belt cover removed?
Thanks, David from jax

Sandman,

If you go to the JD web site, you can search for this mower in their parts section and get exploded view diagrams with listing for all parts.

If my link works, it should take you right to it:

John Deere - Parts Catalog

On edit: I tried it and it didn't work, but it does get you to the catalog search. Just plug 261 into the search box and go from there.

Thanks Runner!
I found the path for the belt that I needed. Now all I need to do is find somebody who actually has these parts. I stopped at another JD dealership today, and actually got a couple of the parts. (bushing for idler tensioner and the bottom seal to the gearbox that I really don't need, but figured on getting in case it starts leaking). In my job, I get to pass a lot of dealerships!

I recovered a 261 couple of years ago. Had to replace a couple of pulleys and bolts. It looked like **** because of rust and a beating it must have took. But the gearbox and drives were in good shape. With new blades it worked like a champ.
Traded it in for a nice price.
