Howdy
i just picked up a used Rhino 240 with a 2 cylinder diesel. Looking around at it and i cant identify which drain/drains is for the transmission and which is for the rear end and or hydrolic resevoir. what are the basics for a tune up on these little tractors. It runs ok but i know it can do better. It looks great now i just want it to run like it looks. I picked it up plenty cheap because i knew i was going to have to put a few bucks into it

Please help ASAP
Thanks

If I'm not mistaken, that's a 2wd tractor. So there's no front differential to worry about. That also means there's no transfer case to drain. Tractors sold as Rhinos have been manufactured by more than one Chinese company, so the age of yours is kinda important. Some were separate sumps, some were common sumps. There are fewer drain/fill points on the common sump type.

So do you have any more identifying data? There should be two ID plates; one on the engine, one somewhere on the tractor itself (commonly on a fender or alongside the tranny). Manufacturer and year is typically found on both.

Hi Again
I found the hydrolic fill and drains and i think the tranny fill is where you said, right by the shifter. it is a 4wd and i know where the front axle fill and drains are. as for the tranny and hydrolic resevoirs they are different "believe me, oops" i still cant identify all the drains on the tranny, when i opened 2 of them only about 1 gallon came out and the resevoir is still fairly full. kinda weird and the drains are not plugged. As for the year it is a 1992 with the ty-290 engine. Ya, it sounds like its missing a little bit with only the 2 cylinders but it has the power expected for a 20 horse motor. The manuals are to arrive next tuesday/wednesday from Farm Boys Tractor. I bought all the manuals they have. Owners, repair/shop manuals but thats a week out.

Thanks

Ok, most of the Rhinos models ending in zero were 2wd (you called yours a 240). The 4wd models ended in a four. 24 horse power 4wd would have been called a 244. You found the front fill/drains, and the tranny. It may fill both the tranny and the rear diff. My tractors have one fill plug each. The tranny will likely have it's own drain, as will the transfer case. The rear diff may have one or two. What we haven't discussed is whether you have a creeper gear or a shuttle shift. If yes, there may be a drain (maybe even a fill) for that one too. Things will become more clear when the manuals arrive.

The thumpers (2 cylinders) take a bit getting used to, but they have great torque. And you can idle them down to almost nothing.

Yup,
hey your right, sorry its a Rhino 204 my bad. i will have to wait for the manuals to arrive for sure now before i screw up anything else. OOPS! it runs and drives good and has all good fluid levels now and it will stay that way for another week or so. Great torque for a 20hp. Clearing some small brush and loose stumps today was a breeze. its a great little chugger for its size and price. Thanks guys
