I installed a 15' 6.5" Glulam beam on my pole barn tonight. The beam is 13 5/8" by 5 1/8". It was a piece of cake to do by myself because I had the right tool for the job. Here is the first of four photos I will post. Here is a link to a previous post on this boom pole.

Here is the fourth and last photo. I am having the trusses for my pole barn delivered this coming thursday. I still have a couple of days of work to do before I am ready for them. They are predicting 6 to 11 inches of snow for us here on the lakeshore tonight so I don't know how much I will get done this weekend. Sorry all the photos are so dark, other than the occassional weekend day I have had to do a lot of the work on this pole barn at night.

Spencer, that definitely looks like the right tool for the job. What do you think the weight of one of the beams is? My guess is that you will be okay up to about 500 pounds and then you'll need some serious ballast. Also, I know you don't maneuver too much with the weight up high. It won't take much side-to-side load shift to tip you and your tractor. If you use your head and be careful, you'll get a lot of use out of your front-end boompole. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Great idea..and looks to be a back saver for sure.

Indeed I hope you do bet the storm..are you putting a metal roofing on?.

Hi Spence,

There is no doubt… you have my vote for ingenuity…/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I just wish you had a helper or a spotter… I’d feel a lot more comfortable like Jim says…

I don’t want to sound like one of those annoying preachers of safety, nor want to be a “mother hen” /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif… but we don’t want anything to happen to ya either…

You know it takes but a moment for things to turn on ya and go wrong and most people’s reaction time won’t come close to saving the situation…

With all that said… & a prayer and lots of counter ballast… Your creativity is never-ending… /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

In the third pic I noticed you had the best tool of them all. Its a tool I have around the house and if I have enough of them my helpers will stay alot longer although not much more work gets done. They are usually carried in 12oz cans. Also the beams look much streighter when using that kind of tool. JB

Great looking setup. Now if I can just manage to duplicate it.... Then find a use for it I'll have some fun and get something constructive done.
Hope you don't mind I've attempted to lighten up one of you pics. Let's see if I can post.

Spence,
That is really amazing. How long did it take you to set up the boom? If it's anything like me, the research in the project took 10 times as long as the doing part.
I must agree with JM3 , you need a spotter on something that dangerous!
Great work. I look forward to seeing more of your stuff!
