Hello all,

I'm new to this forum but I'm getting ready to buy a compact tractor and have been looking at this site for some time now. I have a old 8N ford but it is getting too old to keep throwing money at.

Here is my situation. I have a 76 acre tract of land with approximately 12 acres that need to be mowed by a finish mower. I live on top of a mountain with a 2.5 mile ( yep 2.5 )
driveway up over the mountain that I have to plow in the winter, and I get ALOT of snow here in the mountains of MD./WV. I really need a " Do It All " tractor.
I already have a Case 580 back hoe for plowing but I really would rather be able to blow the snow away from the road.
Now, I have no Idea what the model numbers mean when I read them but I need something that will have enough HP. to throw alot of snow and yet still be small enough to mow the grass.
I have seen alot of compact tract 4wd tractors with really small front wheels and I don't think that would cut it for me.
They don't have to be huge though, I just need good ground clearance for the snow... Oh yeah, and like almost everyone else, I don't want to spend a fortune.. thanks !! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'll take a stab at this one, keep in mind I could be talkin' out my back side......I live in Fla. so what do I know about snow!

Anywho, me thinks you may be barkin' up the wrong tree with graymarket Yanmar (keep im mind I love Yanmar be it gray or Domestic models) I'm not sure if you can find a graymarket yanmar that will have a front pto on it for a snow blower and I don't think you can run one off a belt from the rear pto (I could be wrong here) a couple of guy's from the site here have made and installed some very neat front pto's on gray market Yanmars...so it can be done.

I don't think in the rice fields they have a need for front pto's on tractors...I could be wrong on this????

If you could locate a 336D Yanmar, but they are few and far between and most you see now are U-haul rentals from days gone by and have had the snot beat out of them. If you want to stay with the name Yanmar and with what you say your needs are (2.5 mile driveway) maybe a 790 or better yet a 990 from John Deere. Both are complete Yanmar tractors very basic and sold by Deere and both can run a snow blower.

One more point I have picked up from this site, I'm don't know how high up you are but I have read you get more useful power from a turbo with thinner air and neither tractor I told you about above are turbo.

Ok, this is the 3rd time I've edited this post, I'm going to keep my mouth shut after this change.

Do you have any dealers for Mahindra, Kioti, Montana, Century, & Branson close, could be worth a look and could help with the wallet.

ktm,

Welcome to TBN.

I'm not sure that there is a single model Yanmar that will "do it all". You have so much to consider. If your going to finish mow 12 acres then turf tires would be essential to leaving less or no tire imprint on a well manicured lawn.

The 2.5 miles of hilly drive and blowing snow would indicate that four wheel drive and much more aggressive tires for traction and control is a must. Other options like a cab and heat would have to be after market or home made.

It is possible to have your tractor equipped for spring and summer duties and switch (tires, blower and weights) for winter tasks. I would think you would need a minimum of 25HP for the driveway, but that may be a little heavy for delicate finish mowing.

The YM four digit series tractors first two digits (YMXX00) indicate your PTO HP. The second series of numbers on some models indicate YMXX00 - 2 cylinder or YMXX01 - three cylinder, and transmission type, either gear or shuttle shift - YMXX10. Clear as mud??

Hope others can contribute more. Good luck and regards, Mark

Thanks for the help . I'm not all that concrened with tracks through my yard. It is really a large field but I like to keep it mowed down. It is far from a golf course however.
I'm not really looking for a front PTO. I would love to have one though but I can live with the blower on the back. I will mostly use my Backhoe to plow and then the blower to blow the sides off the road so I will have room to put the next snow.
Thanks for the explaination of the tractors also. SO 25 hp is a minimum for blowing snow? any model that is better than others? or, is there just one 25hp Yanmar?

I recommend a 2210D. I just bought one a few weeks ago from LMTC - (a great dealer by the way). It is 26 HP w 4wd. I mower my 3 acre yard with it and it does an excellent job and it is strong enough for the work you will be doing.

ktm,

Just a general location in your profile will probably help you and others recommend a reputable dealer that you can speak with on the phone. (LMTC is a fine example as mentioned before). But it depends on your location for best (honest) dealers that are nearest you.

Unless your backhoe is a TLB, then clearing that much drive must be very time consuming and labor intensive. Maybe a Yanmar with quick detach FEL with your blower would be the way to go. Come spring, detaching your loader, blower and hooking up a finish mower would be fairly fast and easy.

Mark 777,

I looked at how to add my location and can not seem to figure it out. I'm in Western Maryland 2 miles from the west virginia line, in the mountains.
It does take me a while with the backhoe to plow the whole road. I usually just run down and back with the hoe and then finish it up with my Yamaha Rhino with a 72 " plow. BUT< once we get a few snows down there is no where else to put it. That's why I need the blower.
What is a TLB backhoe? ( I'm sure I'm going to fell stupid when you answer that one )
What do you think a ball park price would be on a Yanmar with 25 or so HP ?

ktm,
Click on "My Home" at the top of the page. Then scroll down to "Personal information, email, password, etc." and click on edit off to the right. Look for the box labeled "Geographic Location" and fill that in. Then save your changes and you'll have it done.

Snow blowing backwards for a 2.5 mile drive? Makes my neck sore just thinking about it! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
