The 12 tires I currently have (truck, van, trailer) were all purchased at discount tire, and all have road hazard protection. I do construction work, so nails and screws aren't hard to find.
All 4 truck tires were replaced under warranty when they started to separate, so that helped seal the deal on purchasing the protection. Manufacturer warranty would have pro rated them, leaving me out several hundred dollars, as they were worn down pretty far.
I managed to pick up a Romex staple (5/8 long, would not think it go thru a tire) in the sidewall of a trailer tire with less than 100 miles on it. Again, free tire. Also had 1 trailer tire separate when bringing the tractor back home (happened within 1/4 mile of home, so I limped it in), another free tire, but manufacturer's warranty should have covered it.
Van tires have been event free, though 1 is apparently older than the rest and is a little weather checked from age, they told me they would replace it under road hazard as well, so I'm just wearing out somebody else's rubber until it gets bad.
I wouldn't bother getting road hazard on a grocery getter either. I have a plug kit, and I know how to use it.
