I know this isnt MY project, however it is related to me in that it involves the road I live on AND it will involve tractors. Does it qualify? You be the judge.
Nonetheless, we live on a 2.5 mile stretch of road that is a divider between 2 cities. Therefore, each entity has to be involved in any and all improvements to the roadway, and when this exists, the county also must get involved. Thus, this project is going to be an ugly 3-headed political dragon. Our road is tar & chip and is long overdue for resurfacing. Finally, this past year, a council woman has offered us some details to the extent of saying the project will be completed FY 2012-13, which began July 1. We have been seeing a fair share of surveying crews, utility locating companies, etc in the area. When they are near, I always try to stop and talk to the crews to probe for answers. Up to this point, they always shake their heads and say they dont have the answers or timelines and refer me to their supervisor. However, today, I got a county guy who was friendly, loose-lipped, and liked to talk. He informed me that the project will begin timber clearing next week and will involve about 4 months of dirt work and total timeframe should be around 9 months. Fun, eh? Oh and get this, when the survey was done, they discovered that current location of the road is not correct and will actually be moved 19 feet north, towards my property.
We currently have a 32' easement to the center of the road. I had our property surveyed when I moved in and was putting up a fence (ironically by the same surveying company the county uses). My fence is at 32'6" and is safe from the relocation project. My concrete approach, tinhorn, flowerbeds, and entrance to our property will be ripped out, moved 19 feet north and then redone by our city. The east end of our easement is 8-10' above the roadway so that bank will be dug out and pushed back. Our brick mailbox, which is 4 feet off the other side of the road, will be 15 feet off the side of the new road. The city put in new underground electric lines last year and they will have to be relocated.
I told the county guy that when it comes time to lay the asphalt and they pass by our property that we will be serving them drinks(non-alcoholic, we dont want a repeat of the last road :laughing
and cooking them hamburgers to say thanks. I think our neighbors will join in with us and provide dessert for them.My wife has been looking forward to a nice paved roadway, however, now she is dreading all the headaches. I think it just occurred to her that it doesnt happen overnight and takes quite a bit of work.
Anyways, I need to snap some pictures of the "before", keep them for our records, and then keep them for the "after" to make sure everything is back to normal.
