Hi to all, I'm a new member as of yesterday.

I've gone up 4' with stones and boulders out of the cherry orchards and a further 4 feet with 10" mean diameter 40'+ pine logs with the help of my 1955 Farm All 400.

It is now too high for the tractor and I would like some ideas on skyline rigging to get the large tie beam logs and roof system purlins and ridge pole up. I'm going to assemble the roof system on the plate logs on the ground and then re erect it all on the barn.

I have a couple of large pine trees at either end of the structure and can use these as spar trees for the high line cable.

I'm a one man operation and would like to have a remotely operated hoist that can travel along the line. I have no experience in rigging such as system. Any source for articles or books and suggestions on the subject would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

Welcome Dave,, You have quite the project there,, I have also used a high line to help erect a few building projects,, Steel cable between two trees a nice big pulley with an electric wench and one can do most anything by them self.. Oooo one thing to remember tie back your line trees to something solid on the ground,, They might be big but they will tend to bow in under load and cause the load to move around more than you think,,
Love to see some pic's too...

another thing to think about is dont get under any of your loads you are using nature made trees that may have week points would hate for you to be crushed when you biggest pick broke your rig

high line is good. also, ramps and a winch will allow you to finish your walls. we want pictures!

Unless you have all the required cables/winches/pulleys it might be more cost effective to just hire a crane for the afternoon or day. Certainly would be quicker and probably safer.

Or maybe a rent a rough terrain forklift.

I 2nd this thoughts

old days the upper logs were rolled up onto the top row using logs laid from ground up to t he top, roll log using ropes, and pulled by horse from the other side.

take long rope, wrap around the tree/log to be put on top one full wrap, ON EACH END (2 ropes) pull from center of structure on other side of structure. log ROLLS up the 2 timbers that form a ramp on the side wall the log is going on. each log is rolled across the top of the side walls to be placed on the FAR side where pull started from. 2nd log goes on the side the ramps are on. (only need 2 ramps for 4 sided bld.) each log you raise the ramps up.

this is still NOT a 1 man job but easier & safer than lifting with tractor overhead.
