I would like feedback from anyone that has or seen someone using a rock auger for a JD compact tractor. I have a compact 4010 with a land pride pd10 post hole digger. I would like to know if one can attach a rock auger to a standard post hole digger? And if so would my 4010 drill a hole to install t-post. I have clay were I do have soil the rest is just soild limestone covered with 2" of dirt. My current auger does make a small hole with the tip of the auger but does not bit down into the rock. I know I also need to install a down pressure kit. thanks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have been looking at PHD and one of the local guys suggested that, with our hard ground, I look at one that attaches to the bucket. It's a few more dollars and does not require a down pressure kit. You might look into that as an alternative.

If you're attempting to drill into limestone, you may need to rent a jackhammer and compresser. The good news is you shouldn't need to drill very deeply into the rock.

I have a Yanmar 1610D which is not a large tractor. I run a heavy duty post hole digger with a Pengo aggressor auger. I can drill through clay and rock pretty easily. Shale and solid rock are the only things that I cant drill through easily. If I had a carbide step bit I think it would go through the shale more easily. It gets centered on the tripple tip and you have to keep rocking the post hole digger back and forth. A rock head would certainly go through rock and solid concrete.
