Hey Cobb, :welcome:!!

I've never even seen a 770, but I'm afraid the answer isn't that easy. How high off the ground is the bucket? Anything in it? Are the tires loaded or do you have other weight there? Wheel spacers or can the rims be made wider (swapped)? The variables are pretty widely ranged.

The best gauge available? Your own personal pucker factor. If it feels tippy, it might be time to back off.

Welcome to another Cobb ! My 1070 has weighted rear tires which seems to help. My tires are the R1s (ag type) and on a side hill pulling a mower it will slide sideways before it begins to feel tippy. I use the individual brake pedals to keep in in line. Yes its a bigger tractor with a larger motor and tires, but your answer will depend on a lot of variables, including where the bucket rides, tire spread and pressure, canopy, fuel tank level, and obviously where the BH is positioned (and how much YOU weigh).

To get a rough estimate, you could get a platform scale, an inclinometer and a jack. Make a plot of the scale weight vs angle and project the angle to a zero weight estimate. Then back it off 10% for a safety margin. Crude but effective. Then measure the sidehill angle you want to traverse.

As I recall, and TractorData.com seems to confirm, the 770 doesn't have adjustable width wheels - that's why I bought an 870. As a result it's significantly more inclined to roll over on a side hill then a tractor with wider wheels. As zzxyb6 describes, my 870 with all wheels at full width and loaded (and with loader removed) tends to slide sideways before it gets tippy.

The one variable that cant be predicted when working on a slope is a tire hitting a hole or a hump. If you are going even at fast walking speed, hitting a hole or hump can produce enough inertia to cause a tip. This can be exaggerated with the FEL full of dirt or rocks and carried a little too high. I had my tractor start to tip once on just a slight incline of maybe 10 degrees at most by just hitting a small rock about the size of a 2 pound coffee can. I had a bucket heaping full of clay soil and was only going at about a walk speed when it hit the rock with the rear wheel on the high side. I felt it starting to go over and immediately dumped the FEL to the ground. Luckily I didnt have it but about 18" off the ground. My tires are 6'6" outside to outside but not loaded. I did have a box blade with 4 concrete blocks on the rear for counter weight also but it wasnt enough to hold the load I had.
Moral is there is no firm data that you can say I can run on xx degree angle and be safe. You can feel the tractor starting to get light on one side way before it goes over barring what I mentioned above. I always run with one hand on the FEL control lever at all times so I am ready to drop the bucket if needed.

hey thanks for all the input. My project is a water line of about 300ft, and if you have been to wv you know the terain. I have a lot of experience on backhoes, i think if i swing the boom uphill and keep lower outrigger lowered when i move i should be ok. Again thanks you guys. cobb71 P.S. the 71 is my age.

given your experience, 71 levels of wisdom and no need to rush, you will be OK although the problem is magnified by the ever changing effects of moving, digging and swinging....recommend you ALWAYS have your hands on hydraulics when moving and otherwise so your reaction time is absolute minimum in case things start to go tippy.

I have the same problem on mine. I do a lot of work in Wayne county and sometimes one wheel gets in the air. You just have to be careful and rent an excavator when it gets too steep. I can sidehill at 20-25 degrees
