Does anyone roll snow? On paths for the tractor on grass or gravel it could be easier that plowing. I have a 4 ft x 2 ft roller. Filled with windshield washer fluid, would it do the job?

I have a roller the same size as yours and I intend to use it next winter. I just want to make a compacted layer of snow at the beginning of the winter and then use my snowblower for the rest of the season. My roller is filled with sand and it weighs around 1200 lbs. I look forward to try it.

We roll our xc-ski trails before we run our groomer over the trails when snow is deep. We use utility snowmobiles for this but the snowmobilers near by use a Ford tractor. They put snowcat tracks around the tires for traction and flotation. Its a big track that fits around both tires. Probly over kill for what you are doing. You really do not need a lot of roller weight , excpecially if you're using tractor. Traction could become problem if hilly, real deep soft, elc. Should be good for walking paths, vehicial paths could get to be mess when softening above freezing. I would start with empty roller, then fill if not happy with results. Ours our 6'x2' but run them empty. Also we always groom when temps below freezing for best and easiest results. Like I said with the snow you must get in upstate new york , it could cause you problems in spring if you are going to repeatedly roll snow and let build up on you roak when you drive you're truck. Also might be good to roll more often durning snow so you can keep traction.

New England used to do this to the roads to make the sufaces passable for horse drawn sleighs. At the Deerfield Fairgrounds there is an Ag history building and they have a huge one on display. It looks just like the picture in the center of this link
