I went over to my folks today to roll the lawn for the spring. As i did this in the rain that later turned to snow i wondered, Do people down south do this or is it just a northern thing? Rolling - towing a big barrel around behind you lawn mower filled with water or sand to smooth out the lawn from the winters thaw.

Never heard of it before much less practiced it. Not an East Texas thing.

Certainly not seasonaly. In the south we do not have as much winter freeze. I have done so a couple of times to smooth a bumpy lawn.

I've never heard, or seen it done for lawns. Usually here for roads and such. Aerating is another story.

It used to be quite common for folks to roll their lawns around here in northern Indiana. However, over the years, it has been determined that rolling the lawn can increase soil compaction, which decreases the soils ability to take in water. Hardly anyone does it anymore around here. Only folks that do it because their fathers did it because their fathers did it because their fathers did it.

I'm planning to roll sections of my yard because of mole damage and also from some tracking by my tractor when the ground was soft. I have a 55 gal plastic barrel I filled with concrete left over from some work I had done. I put in a piece of aluminum pipe before pouring the concrete and I have a nice axle in there now. All I need is to fabricate a hitch, and I'll be able to flatten just about anything. Should weigh about 1100 lbs.

Never heard of it down here in SE Texas but it might be useful to smooth out the fire ant mounts and the crawfish mounds. Of course you would have to do it early in the year before it starts to dry up. Soil already to dry now.

It's about that time! I guess I do it because my father did it-but I know one that I did not do it, the lawn just about broke my back mowing it. I agree about the aeration, if I ever had a really nice lawn, I would try to smooth it by aeration, or by rolling then aerating.

I filled a 55 gallon drum with concrete to use for a counter weight on a 2wd tractor I had. It weighed no where near 1100lbs. If it is laying on its side, I can tip it up on end by myself. I ain't no circus strongman, either. ;)

You may be stronger than you think.:)

A good rule of thumb for most concrete mixtures is 150 pounds per cubic foot. If you fill a 5-gallon bucket you've moved nearly 100 pounds of concrete.
