Rotary cutter discharge safety chains

Hi all,
Can some one take a couple of pictures of how long the chains on the discharge of their rotary cover are. Do they hang down about even with the bottom of the deck? I have an old 5/16" log chain that has a couple of stretched links and plan on cutting it up for the discharge and inlet guards.

Another "spare time" project that probably won't get completed till I really need them..

We have 4 links hanging free on the back of ours and the 5th is welded to a strip that goes across the back of the deck.

Here is a photo.

Since you are making your own, be darned sure that the chains will not be forced back into the blades when in heavy grass. Figure that the chains will be horizontal.

I built a chain guard for a rotary cutter a while back and ended up with an arc in the front set chains. Dumb, I know.

Either move the chains out with a piece of angle iron to dangle off of or use different lengths of chain near the center to miss the blades. Otherwise the blades will make the arc for you.

and yes GW I had already thought of the blades hitting the chains. Idea is to prevent flying objects, not create them :thumbsup:

You can also use a used piece of hay baler belting and it makes cutting in the hot summertime a lot less dusty.
