Welcome to TBN!!

A three point hitch is a universal hitch used to connect the tractor up to implements. It was invented by Harry Ferguson.

It comes in various different sizes:

Cat 1 is the most common on compact tractors.
Cat 2 on bigger tractors
Cat 3 on even bigger ones
Cat 4 on huge tractors

Here is a quote taken from somewhere else with lots of info

Standard specifications set by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers

Definitions CATEGORIES 0,1,2,3 and 4 are used to classify tractors by drawbar horsepower. The table below gives dimensions and the horsepower ratings that are associated with these categories.

Maximum Drawbar Horsepower -TopLink Pin Diameter -Draw Pin Diameter -Lift Arm Spacing
Cat. 0- up to 20 5/8" 5/8" 20"
Cat 1- up to 45 3/4" 7/8" 26"
Cat 2- 40 to 100 1" 1 1/8" 32"
Cat 3- 80 to 225 1-1/4" 1-7/16" 38"
Cat 4- 180 to 400 1 3/4" 2" 46 "

I think the shaft you are referring to is maybe a Power Take Off Shaft. This is the removable shaft that is used to transmit power from the tractor to a powered implement.

P.S. This would have probably got better responses if it was posted in a more appropriate forum. There is also loads of information around if you have a quick search for it.

Driveline ratings are used to differentiate between the different types of protection for the gearbox/tractor. I believe that an ASAE 5 driveline would mean that it has a slipclutch, , it might also have something to do with the type of u-joints used. but dont qoute me. I also believe that cat 5 is the highest rating, agian, dont qoute me.

I'm sitting here wondering what all this information has to do with rotary cutters. Anyways, speaking of rotary cutters, I saw a fantastic rig at the county fair.

Picture a very large JD with a heavy 3 point and PTO on the front as well as the rear. Then mount 3 rotary hay cutters - to bush hog style, but the ones that contain several rotating disks mounted side by side and spinning parallel to the ground - each about 15 or 20 feet wide. Put one on the front, the other two offset to each side on the back. I asked the sales guy how fast the monster would mow hay and he replied that most guys cut about 35 to 40 acres per HOUR! I didn't ask about ground speed to accomplish that little feat, but I was impressed.

We now return this thread from it's title to the topic of hitch categories if anyone just happens to know the category of those hitches on that big JD. I think it was something like a 7930, but JD numbers have always been a source of bewilderment for me.
