I change the height of my tail wheel for cutting my yard and when cutting rough stuff. Is it OK is I change the nut and bolt setup at the rear aand replace it with a stout pin from JD of the same lenght and diameter. It is a pain to always need 2 wrenches to undo the bolt and a pin would be much faster. Only concern is would ANY ammount of play eventually ream the holes? Has anyone else done this? Figured if I got the same dimensions I'd be oK.

I would thing that a pin and clip wouldn't hold the two pieces nearly as tight as the bolt, lock washer and nut assembly. Not only would it ream out the holes but it would likely shear off the pins you use as well. I'd stay with the factory setup.

I'd agree with Gary. The pin and clip won't provide any clamp load causing the parts to move more. That will result in wear, elongated holes etc. Stick with the nut and bolt /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Not to contradict myself here, but I have an idea you might try if you're really gung ho on having a way to switch heights without tools. Why not replace the setup you have now with something akin to a (much smaller) receiver tube and insert? They'd fit snugly enough to eliminate the problems I mentioned above and you could use a pin a clip with it. It would take a little bit of engineering and welding on your part, but, as I said, if you're gung ho on this idea I think it would work for you.

I'm no designer or fabricator, but it just struck me that something like that could solve your problems. Let me know what you think. Good luck with whatever you decide. I hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
