We have been using a Woods DS1260 pull type for four years and used it in some really, really gnarly stuff and it has been a great cutter. We pull it with an M8540. I don't think you will have any problems puling it with your tractor. Woods is the predominant brand in my area and there isn't even a close dealer. Most use the 15 foot batwing though. 10 foot worked better for our needs.

I think that the 10 ft will be better for my needs also, I can buy the john deere mx10 for the same money, don't know which one to buy.

Both are good cutters, I thinkovrszd has an MX10 3PH model, so you might PM him, very helpful and knowledgeable. He uses an open station M9540 with his. He bought his used.

I am sure Bush Hog and others make good cutters, I just have no experience with them as I use Woods and Land Pride.

i don't have experience w/pull type mowers. naturally, you can get away w/a bigger mower that way compared to the 3pt lift models. if you are certain you only need the pull type, then just look at the HP pto requirements on the mower itself. think the pto hp on the 7040 is around 60-65. i have a 2 spindle 96" Rhino heavy duty lift type which is great for my 8540. in my case, lifting is a must. rhino is as heavy duty or more so than BH or Woods or land pride. they're all good in the heavy duty models. finish mowers are a whole different category & service application....in general i would stay away from them even on level rock free conditions. it always pays to study all the specs on each model before pulling the trigger. your 7040 owners manual will give you the max specs for various implements in terms of lift & size best of luck

I'd pass on that mx10. We had one that was nothing but a joke.

Both of the gear box spindles broke (at desperate times) sending the stump jumper and blades flying off. The biggest thing it ever mowed was a rose bush, no sapling trees or what have you. We basically were using it as a oversized lawn mower for clipping pasture.

It seems like there was a big fuss at the time over casting flaws in the spindles. It went to live with someone else after the second one broke.

The deck was pretty thin also, the slightest thump from underneath would knock the paint off the top.

Hi , I own a john deere HX10 pull type . I also own a woods BB840, 3pth I like both brands IMO . From what Ive read woods was one of if not the first to build a rotary cutter. ( I could be mistaken but I think I read this) regardless they build very good mowers. Ive have tried and proven this with mine , mowing up to 4" trees etc on very rough ground where I live . I also will back my jd Hx 10 , Its rated at heavy duty and it also has mowed very heavy brush ,filth etc.... I have no problems with either machine. I use the woods for backing up and around trees etc.... and for some of the really steep ground I mow on my farm. Its steep and full of slips etc ....... very rough. I pull these mowers with a Jd 5093e cab MFWD with a jd 553 FEL with fluid all 4 and rear wheel weights, loader on for extra weight and some occasional grubbing!. I hope this helps good luck to U.

I have a WOODS DS1440 and LANDPRIDE RCR3596 pull-types both been great. The 12ft flat-deck WOODS in a pain,on un-level pasture not to dig in on one side or the other and to haul. The 8ft LP is good except for the deck not being flat and material build up on it but it feels small, not much the 7040 wont mow over with it. The 10ft would be a good size,if I had to do over would have got the 15ft batwing instead of the DS1440 or atleast have got the 12 batwing.
