Rotary Shaper

My latest thing to play with is american buffalo horns. Making spoons for my kids and related kids like this one:

After a search I found just the perfect shaper:

2" Diameter Rotary Shaper

It chips the material fairly well with low amount of dust and in drillpress it is real pleasure to work with. Tried on some wood too - since I have to make about 5 wooden swords every year - the kids brake them fast and if left outside, the dogs will chew them in to pieces.

Anyway, the shaper will cut cross the wood or plywood in reasonable smoothness and faster than any drum sender would.

There is a new woodcraft store open in Leesburg - it is gonna cost me a lot of money over the time

I just discovered WoodCraft a few weeks ago myself - Definitely a nice toy, I mean tool store for wood workers.

That rasp looks like a neat tool and also pretty inexpensive for a tool. Neat idea on the spoons too - what do you use to seal the horns after you get them in shape? Also, how big are your kids mouths

What size is the shank on that? I first thought it was 1/2" but am not sure. I have several MicroPlane tools as rasps and planes - handy!

It's less than 1/2" - I think 3/8".

I wonder if it would work on mussel shells. I was thinking of making a cross necklace, but my chainsaw sharpener bit made too much dust (smelled like burning hair yuck!!) trying to cut out shape. You know the inside of the shells are pretty/shiny, and I may have to buff the rough side. I'm hoping to find something that I can cut the shell with, may have to use carbide tip in air die/grinder. Will sure have to be careful around the fingers with either one.

It took me a while, but here are some pics of one of the swords, it is not big art, with the rate those swords disappear I am interested in the most efficient production

Basically just glued cross from a thin board shaped on sand drum in a drill press - but the rotary shaper is gonna work better I am sure.

The buffalo spoon is just polished and used after washing. I had one when I was a kid - and it holds pretty well against soup or eintopf.

But the buffalo horn is nice material to work with - I am thinking about using it for some knife handle etc.
