Rotation on Auger

What direction should the auger rotate for drilling holes? I just tested my 8" auger in some very soft ground. The auger only went down about a foot. I tried a little down pressure and it would just lift the machine. I believe it is rotating counter clockwise.

it should go clockwise. its real obvious as the teeth point in the direction of travel.

i dont think its even possible for a 3 point auger to go in reverse...unless its a hydraulic controlled unit.

Now since you stated that you have down pressure, i would guess that you may be talking about a skid steer type auger...and those do have the ability of traveling in reverse.

to dig, it needs to "screw in to hole" and to back out (if you have reversing ability) it "screws out".

The auger circuit is the PTO hyd on the Power-Trac, and only tuns the hyd motor in one direction.

If you look at the hyd shaft, the hyd motor probably turns in a counter clockwise direction. If you look down at the auger turning, it is turning clockwise.

The way to reverse the auger is to switch the hoses around.

You could add another hyd valve and make it fwd and rev flow.

If your auger is turning counter clockwise look down at the hose, it would not dig even a foot as it would just be wiping the ground.

If your auger is turning the wrong way, just reverse the hyd motor hoses.

On the hoses from the hyd motor, do you have the same QD's, or do you have a male and a female QD?

If you have a male and a female QD, then you need to have the motor ports setup to run the correct direction.

Just switch things around until the auger is turning the correct direction.

JJ, I would love to put a valve so that i could go in both directions if needed without leaving the seat. Is that possible?

It is very possible.

The PTO valve provides an 8 GPM flow when you flip the switch.

A single spool 3 position detent motor spool valve would work great.

This spool valve has friction detent for speed control. The lever stays where you set it.

The flow from the PTO valve would connect to the IN port of the new valve, and OUT from the new valve would plug back into the PTO return QD.

So the flow path is now, pump to PTO valve, to new valve, OUT port back to PTO, then to tank.

i i see that now...did not see that in the beginning.

Then again, i like my 3 point auger now that it has power down assist. Some day when i have some free money lying around, i would like to get a loader mounted auger that can power off my 3 point hydraulic assist package that i have for my loader mount snowblower....someday.
