I am in the middle of trying to build a BBQ Smoker on a trailer.
and I would like to put a rotisserie in it.

Problem being ( money ) I am looking for a gear reducer so that I can use a
1/8 horse power electric motor I would like the rotisserie to run
at about 1 rpm per min
Any idea痴 on how to make this ??

In my younger days, we built several of these (we were cooking 4 -5 pigs, several times a summer). Best thing we found was old bulk (milk) tank agitator motors. Find a farm auction or an old farmer around that replaced his bulk tank and has the old one sitting out beside the barn. The motors are already geared down, food grade, sealed, and hold up well to the heat of the barbecue. Fab a mount for it, then run a belt drive from the motor to the spit with a simple tensioner.

How about using an old bicycle? If your motor has a 0.5" shaft and you placed it directly against the tire of a 27" bike, it will give you a 54:1 reduction at the rear sprocket and closer to 200:1 at the front sprocket if you keep it in high gear. You could probably get the remaining 9:1 or 18:1 (depending if your motor is 1750 rpm or 3450 rpm) from the pulley you drive the spit with.

Thanks for the idea's Please keep them comming..
This will be on a trailer out side for BBQ and the rotation
has to be very slow ( 1 rpm per min ) with
power to turn about 150 lbs.
This is my first time at this and I am LOST

You don't need no stinkin' 1/8 hp electric motor. You need a 3cyl. diesel powerin' a hydrostat in low gear. Might have to turn the idle rpm's down a little to get the 1 rpm desired. Now if you wanted to know how to convert a bale spear into a prong to hold the meat, or you wanted to know how to replace the backhoe bucket with a giant brush to slather BBQ sauce on or you wanted to know what kind of adapt-a-kit would be the best to attach a grapple on the loader bucket to feed firewood into the burner then this is the group to ask. But don't expect much help towards a wimpy 1/8hp electric motor. Just kidding. Try WW Grainger for what is known as a gearmotor. They have a bunch of them. If they are too expensive at least you might have a better idea of what to use. Maybe you can find something similar at a local salvage yard near you.

Get a couple of old riding lawnmower manual transmissions and you can probably assemble whatever gear train you need.

old tread mills work good for parts yoyu can often find them beside the road for free and they have all the controls you need.
