The best way would be to start with pictures. There are a few brands that have unique colors, but depending on how old it is, or if it's a common color, it might take somebody who has one to recognize it.

You really don't need to know the brand to replace the blades, just take them off and find replacements the same size. Places like Tractor Supply and Atwoods sell blades that are hanging on the shelves. You might get lucky and find an exact match. I didn't but I know my brand and ended up ordering them from my dealer. There are also several online sources for blades that you can order based on the measurments of the blades. I've only done this from Sears.com for my ridealong lawn mower, but have looked at the blades sold from ASC.

Depending on the type of cutter, getting the nut off that holds the blades in place is usually the hardest part of replacing them. Mine take a 1 11/16 socket that is at 500lbs and I had to buy a good quality impact wrench to do this. Now that I've done it a few times it's not so bad, but that first time was a real adventure!!!!!!

Good luck,
Eddie
