A friend of mine bought a rototiller for her husband from TS. Mistake number one. They didn't have the one in stock that they said would fit her tractor and she wanted it for his birthday so she paid $200 special freight and had to pick it up at the shippers depot. Got it home and it was to big for his sub compact MF. TS's fault, mistake #2. TS took it back and reordered a smaller tiller. They would not refund the extra shipping. Understandable. Paid extra freight again to get the second one in time for his BD. Got it home hooked it up, filled all the fluids, started using it and the gear box seal leaks oil and and the chain case seal leaks. TS will not warrantee it because she can not find the sales receipt. They told her to contact the manufacturer and I don't know how that is going. I have read about an additive that can be added to the oil that will swell the seal and hopefully stop the leak. Does anyone know what the name of the product is and where I might get it. Another option to use grease. Can anyone suggest what to use? Just tying to help them out.
Thanks for the help

Nothing about this sounds right. If your account of the situation is accurate she needs to call TS corporate.

If the wife used a credit card, she should get a copy of the statement that has the TSC charge on it, that should suffice for proof of purchase.

To attempt controlling the leaks, maybe try this?

Hydraulic Oil Booster With Stop Leak - gallon.
$29.74 with free shipping from AMAZON.

I have NOT used the product!

ive had good luck working with TS on a few things so i would imagine this should work out ok unless there has been a considerable amount of time - there would be a record of it on her CC when she paid for it or from a check so unless she paid cash for the shipping and the product this would be trackable.

I would NOT use any stop leak! I'd fix it right in the first place!

and FWIW on the stop leak stuff, i wouldn't go that route, id get a new seal and make a gasket for the chain gearbox thing, i made one for mine last yr out of gasket stock and rebuilt my tiller gearbox as it came from the factory with straight gears and from hitting rocks i think i broke the teeth out, it now has helical cut gears in it, much stronger !!! so i put in new seals on the shafts then as well. its not a big job at all i wouldn't think

One might THINK that a new tiller would be without fault, but that is just wishful thinking. AG equipment is more like a DIY kit. Pre assembled, but some details are left to the user.

TS is certainly not 'responsible', they are only the resellers of something produced by someone else. Would you hold STAPLES responsible for difficulties you might have with Windows 11 on a lap top computer?

TS might help, but it would be strictly on a good will basis. Really, How much "profit" are they going to make off a birthday gift consumer?

If it was my tiller I'd put corn head grease(NLGI #0 grade) in the gear boxes. I agree on not using any type of seal softener. On another note I have a KK ll tiller that I bought new from TSC over 15 yrs ago that's tilled many acres. All I had to do to is is replace the set of knives from wear. The old knives resembled a toothpick

Let me get this straight. The OP's friend bought a brand new tiller at TS. First time they sent the incorrect one, the second one they sent had a defect. Absolutely they're responsible!! Yes, if I bought a PC from Staples and it was defective, I'd expect them to make it right without making me jump thru hoops. (Windows 11? Did I miss something?)
Most of what TS sells is their own house brand. I don't think it's my responsibility to track down whatever contract manufacturer made it. Maybe if it was several years old, but certainly not a brand new item. Personally, I don't see how she should have been on the hook for shipping (other than the initial time) either...it was their mistake, not hers.

I think there's more to this story than we know.

SO, if you bought a NEW Mahindra and it had problems, you wouldn't expect Mahindra to fix it?? I mean TYM built it, so should you have to go back to TYM??

How about when Ford or GM sells a car supplied by a foreign company (and they do) and puts THEIR name on it, you wouldn't expect Ford of GM to do the warranty/repairs on it???

TSC should repair or replace that tiller!!!
