If you buy a very wide tiller, bring lots of power. I have a 72" heavy built really nice tiller that will till to about 9" deep. However, it takes every bit of 50hp PTO power to do that in my hard packed heavy clay soil. Unless you have well over 50 hp PTO power, I wouldn't worry too much about how deep the tiller will till. It will likely till deeper than you can turn it. As the saying goes, don't ask me how I know that. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What is the horsepower rating on your tractor? And how wide is that tiller? Personally, I have a 29hp tractor, and it handles a 5ft tiller great! Also, you will love the tiller. There are so many uses for it. One piece of advice. Sometimes, when hitting real hard soil, the tiller can bounce or "hop" a bit. When this happens, it can loosen bolts and nuts real quick. Just watch it close, and the bolts and nuts that come loose, add lockwashers to them. It will save a lot of headache and lost bolts. Good luck!

ALso forgot to mention, if you want to see some good pics of how impressive a rototiller is, go to the photo section, and on like the 3rd page or so, you will see my post named "Pond Project and some other stuff". Look at the pictures there towards the end of the post and you can look at what it will do to rock hard clay.

I've noticed that on my 52" tiller, if I try to penetrate hard soil deeply in one pass, my tiller hops and bangs around a lot. But if I set it for about 2" depth, it is much smoother. Then on subsequent passes, the skid shoes sink and the tiller is cutting 4" or so.

Think it has a lot to do with angle of attack, whatever that is!

I recently bought the same unit for my NH TC35 and the tractor works fine with it. If anyone is interested, I have an Agri-tec 5ft tiller for sale. Works great, but was too light for the TC35. had it behind a 1520 and was a good match.

5in depth is pretty good for 1 pass in previously undisturbed soil 2 or three passes should get you to 8in.

If you have a moldboard plow use it first and you will get 8in first pass
