Rough Night

   / Rough Night #11
I used to know a fella who retired from Scotland Yard. He said he went back to the office to visit a couple of times, but quickly learned, in law enforcement at least, that once you've retired, you aren't part of the group anymore. When I retired in 1989, I never went back. I occasionally saw someone I used to work with and visited a bit, really have only kept in touch with one. He retired 5 months after I did.

I did go to the new headquarters in 2004 to get a new ID card. The old card simply had name, rank, and date of retirement. The new one also has "honorably" retired after 24 years; a requirement under the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004 if I want to legally carry a concealed handgun. I didn't see anyone in the building that I recognized and don't think any of them recognized me.

So now I go to the police pistol range once a year to qualify and maybe a couple of times a year just to practice, but I don't know any of the officers there anymore. I'd go more often just for practicing if it weren't so far over there. The Bass Pro shop with an indoor pistol range is much closer, so I just use that once or twice a month for practice. In fact, that's where I went this morning.
