Need to put a new radio in another piece of equipment I just bought. Radio is dead.
I've had good luch with basic Sony am/fm/cd from Wal Mart, but wondered if I should be using a heavy equipment radio?
Does anyone sell a resonable priced basic am/fm/mp radio for heavy equipment? I have a panasonic rough use unit in my dump truck, but I don't know if they really are built any better than a standard car stereo or just a gimmick?

i put a radio in my ford 4600.. I hae a nice pro flip top arangement in my NH 7610s.. it has some cheap basic radio in it that has lasted me 12 ys.. it was on a nh 1920 i had for a few years then i swapped it.

the one i put in my 4600 was a walmart brand ( dual? ).. and it was the cheap dial type.. not digital.. 25$ maybee? I mounted it in a plastic narrow ammo box with a sealing lid, using a piece of 1/4" board as the mount panel.. used some angle iron tabs and epoxy to mount the panel inset inside the box a few inches so the cover would shut and not hit the dials.. drilled a hole inthe rear to run the antenna and power wires out.. rtv'd up the hole.. and then made a bracket and mounted it to the underside of my canopy onmy rops.. door swings open, i can work the radio.. has a headphone jack or (2) 4" speakers.

I guess i've had it? dunno 1.5ys now and no issues...

I use a pair of Peltor AM/FM headphones w/mp3 jack in my surplus deuce-and-a-half, tractor, lawn mower, and shop with air tools. There might be laws against on road use in your area, but I have to wear hearing protection driving the deuce on the highway anyway.

Jensen makes some HD weather proof, vibration resistant but I don't think they are cheap. I had a marine grade AF/FM/CD player in my pontoon bought new in 2002. It made through the 1 year warranty (barely). When went back to dealer about it he told me to get one a Walmart for fraction of the price and replace when they quit. Bought one at 1/4 price had it in there 9 years and it finally gave up this year.

sounds like it's cheaper to keep buying the cheapos and rolling the dice. I think I spent $300 at the local peterbilt/IH dealer. It has been in the big dump truck for >8 years.

I would just go for those cheaper $80-$100 Sony xplode or pioneer USB mp3 units. The have a USB port and aux port. I think they are pretty tough cause they don't have the CD drive. Plus they don't take up so much room depth wise.

Ive got a Jensen Heavy duty radio in my skidsteer and its been there for at least 5 years now, not 1 problem and the conditions couldn't get much worse, dust, tons of vibration, and extreme lows and highs in temperatures. I bought it as a combo package with the speakers here JHD 910 Stereo
