I have the same issue here
this procedure will not level huge dips it smooths the earth basically taking out pot holes
so the first question is do you just want to smooth it - ie you may have small rolling hills - lawnmowers will run fine the top is smooth or level it meaning it will all be on the same plane ?
first I wait for a fairly wet day
i take a set of discs and set them almost straight just so they cut in but not so they pull any earth I criss cross the grass in many directions
now the sod has been scored
next i take a roller I made out of an old water tank
I now roll that over the sod - since the sod has been scored its much easier to compress it - this results in a smooth albeit not level lawn
